Pada juni 2007, AMD merilis tipe Prosesor Athlon64 X2 hemat daya (45watt) yang menerapkan proses manufaktur 65nm, yang diberi nama "Athlon X2".
Keuntungan dari tipe prosesor dual-core seperti X2 ini adalah mereka mampu memproses lebih banyak "softwarethreads" pada saat bersamaan yang biasa disebut thread-level parallelism (TLP). Dengan meletakkan 2 core dalam satu chip, tipe XP 2x lebih efektif dalam hal pemrosesan TLP, yang tergantung pada situasinya.
